Joanna Whittington, director, railway markets and economics at the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), said:

Britain's road and rail networks have benefitted from sustained levels of investment in recent years, to meet the demands of increasing train passengers and road users. As the combined economic and safety rail regulator and strategic roads monitor, it is hugely beneficial for ORR to understand changes in travel trends.
This research provides a useful insight into the factors prompting people to choose different modes of transport, and explores changing travel attitudes among key groups in the population. Research of this kind can support our work to ensure the rail and highways sectors are providing what members of the public, customers and funders need and want.
