We took over responsibility for regulating health and safety on the railway from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) on 1 April 2006.
This was one of the changes set out in The Railways Act 2005 that required amendments to the legislation.
The HSE gives advice to the Government on health and safety matters. As one of our statutory duties, we work closely with the HSE on any safety implications that may follow from the exercise of its functions.
The HSE is responsible for the regulation of risks to health and safety arising from work activity in Britain. Their mission is to prevent death, injury and ill health to those at work and those affected by work activities.
