The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) has today published its Rail Industry Finance (UK) 2020-21 report.

London’s Stratford railway station recorded the most passenger entries and exits during a year that saw Britain’s passenger usage drop 78% compared with the previous year. This was the lowest level of journeys seen since at least before 1872 and is a result of the pandemic.

The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) is calling for Network Rail to take action to retain a railway which more reflects the train service performance improvements seen over the pandemic, as more passengers return to the railway.

The current signalling market in Great Britain is valued at £800-900 million per year. As Britain’s railway infrastructure undergoes one of the most significant modernisation programmes in its history as it increasingly adopts digital technology, the market is expected to expand significantly. The Office of Rail and Road has today (29 October) published updated guidance to key railway safety regulations following a review of how the guidelines work in practice for railway companies.

An Office of Rail and Road (ORR) review commissioned into how Network Rail (NR) plans for and delivers engineering works has found that while there have been some recent improvements, further work is required to minimise disruption to passengers and ensure public money is spent appropriately.
